Scaffolding glossary

The words scaffolders and planners use, explained in one or two sentences, with the same term in Norwegian, German, Dutch, Polish, Czech, Slovak, Hungarian, Danish, Finnish and French.

Terms

scaffold

A temporary structure of standards, ledgers and decks that gives safe working platforms along a building.

facade scaffold

Scaffold erected along a building's facade with working platforms at every level; the usual scaffold on houses.

frame scaffold

Facade scaffold built from prefabricated vertical frames joined by decks and braces; quick to erect, with fixed bay lengths.

modular scaffold

Scaffold built from separate standards, ledgers and transoms joined at nodes (rosettes or wedge cups), so it can follow almost any shape.

wedge connection

A joint where a ledger head is locked to the standard by driving in a wedge, without loose bolts or couplers.

rosette

A perforated disc welded to a modular standard at regular heights (usually every 0.5 m); ledgers and braces are wedged to it.

bay

The space between two pairs of standards along the wall; its length is the system's bay length, for example 3.07 m or 2.57 m.

lift

One storey of the scaffold, usually about 2 m high; a lift with a deck is a working level.

standard

A vertical tube that carries the scaffold's load down to the ground; in a frame scaffold the standards are part of the frames.

frame

A prefabricated vertical element of two standards with welded crossbars, the main part of a frame scaffold.

ledger

A horizontal member along the wall that joins two standards and carries decks or guardrails.

deck

The working platform laid on a lift between the ledgers or frames, in steel, aluminium or timber.

guardrail

Rails at about 1 m and 0.5 m above the deck on the open side, so nobody falls off the platform.

toe board

A board along the edge of the deck that stops tools and material from sliding off.

brace

A diagonal member that stiffens the scaffold along the wall so it does not sway.

base jack

An adjustable screw jack under each standard that levels the scaffold on the ground or on a base plate.

wall tie

An anchor that ties the scaffold to the building so it cannot tip over; the number follows the system's tie rule.

tie schedule

A plan of how many wall ties go where on each facade, based on the manufacturer's assembly instructions.

stair tower

A scaffold bay with stair flights between the lifts that gives safe access to every working level.

ladder access

Access between lifts through a hatch deck with a built-in or separate ladder.

gable

The triangular wall under a pitched roof; scaffold on a gable wall follows the slope up towards the ridge.

eaves

The lower edge of the roof; the top deck of a facade scaffold usually sits just below the eaves.

ridge

The highest line of a pitched roof, where the two roof slopes meet.

roof edge protection

Guardrail on the scaffold above the eaves that catches people and material sliding off the roof.

parts list

The list of every scaffold component and its count for one job, used for ordering, loading and checking.

parts inventory

The scaffold material a company has in stock, checked against the parts list of a job.

load class

The class of a scaffold by the load its decks may carry (classes 1 to 6 in EN 12811-1); it limits the bay length and the use.

What is a bay on a scaffold?

A bay is the space between two pairs of standards along the wall. Its length is the system's bay length, for example 3.07 m or 2.57 m.

What is a lift on a scaffold?

A lift is one storey of the scaffold, usually about 2 m high. A lift with a deck is a working level.

What is the difference between a frame scaffold and a modular scaffold?

A frame scaffold is built from prefabricated frames and is quick on straight facades. A modular scaffold is built from separate standards, ledgers and braces joined at rosettes or wedge cups, so it can follow any shape.
