Layher Allround parts list for a house elevation

Scaffolding one elevation of a two-storey house is the bread-and-butter job: a front for new windows, a render repair or a repaint. Here is the complete Layher Allround parts list ScaFix’s engine produces for an elevation 8.5 m wide with the eaves at 5.2 m, how each line follows from the layout, how the list changes for other house sizes, and which UK rules sit on top of it.

What is on a Layher Allround parts list for a house elevation?

For one elevation 8.5 m wide with eaves at 5.2 m, ScaFix’s engine plans Layher Allround as 3 bays (1 × 3.07 m + 2 × 2.57 m) with two working lifts and 143 pieces: 24 standards, 18 ledgers, 12 transoms, 7 steel decks, 18 guardrails, 6 toe boards, 2 braces and 10 ties.

Before you rely on this guide

This guide summarises published rules to help you plan and is not legal advice. It has not been reviewed by a qualified scaffold designer or engineer. ScaFix is a planning aid, not structural approval: the manufacturer's instructions, the scaffold design and a competent person's inspection decide what is built and used on site.

How does 8.5 m become three bays?

Layher Allround’s common bay lengths are 3.07 m and 2.57 m. Three long bays would be 9.21 m, two would be 6.14 m. The engine fills the elevation with 1 × 3.07 m + 2 × 2.57 m, 8.21 m in all, just under the 8.5 m wall: each end of a lift stops roughly 15 cm short of the corner, which is still within reach from the deck. Three long bays would overshoot the wall by about 70 cm. One bay is longer than the others, which means two lengths of ledger, deck, guardrail and toe board on the order.

With the eaves at 5.2 m, the scaffold has two working lifts, at 2.25 m and 4.25 m. The top lift sits below the eaves so the roofline is in reach without the lift clashing with the gutter.

Computed by ScaFix’s engine for exactly this job, with the system’s own bay lengths and rules. Corners are in the list only where the job is a whole house; openings, sheeting, hoists and loading bays are not. The manufacturer’s instructions decide: this is a planning aid, not structural approval.

Why does each line have the number it has?

Four standard lines (three bays plus one), each with an inner and an outer standard, and three ledger levels (the base and two working lifts) explain almost the whole list:

LineCountWhere it comes from
Standards 2 m164 lines × 2 × 2 lifts
Standards 1 m84 lines × 2: the posts that carry the guardrail above the top lift
Ledgers183 bays × 2 sides × 3 levels
Transoms124 lines × 3 levels
Decks73 bays × 2 lifts, plus one at the foot of the ladder; 2 are ladder decks with a hatch
Lift-off preventers10U-section decks need a separate lift-off preventer (Layher, p. 18)
Guardrails183 bays × 2 (top rail and mid rail) × 3 rows: both lifts and the base bay, which ScaFix rails for longitudinal stiffness
Toe boards63 bays × 2 lifts
End guardrails, end toe boards4 + 42 ends × 2 lifts
Braces2one per lift; Layher requires vertical braces in at least every fifth bay
Ties and tie fittings10 + 10each standard line tied, plus ties for forces along the facade
Base jacks and base collars8 + 84 lines × 2

The bracing rule is Layher’s own: “Stiffen at least every fifth bay with vertical diagonal braces”, preferably on the outside (Layher Allround, Instructions for Assembly and Use 04.2018, p. 22).

How does the list change for other houses?

A narrower front, 6.5 m, takes two long bays and 108 pieces; a wider one, 10.5 m, four short bays and 178. Width adds standard lines and bays; height adds whole lifts. Taking the same 8.5 m front up to 7.5 m eaves, a third lift, gives 182 pieces.

Which UK rules apply on top of the list?

  • Guardrails and toe boards. The Work at Height Regulations 2005 require the top guardrail to be at least 950 mm above the edge, an intermediate guardrail so that no gap exceeds 470 mm, and toe boards suitable and sufficient to prevent falls of people and materials (SI 2005/735, Schedule 2). Allround’s three-part side protection, top rail, mid rail and toe board, is what the guardrail and toe board lines provide.
  • Manufacturer’s instructions. HSE’s position is that system scaffolds are erected to the manufacturer’s instructions, anything outside them needs a design, and the scaffold is inspected after installation, at intervals of no more than 7 days, and after anything that could affect it (HSE: Scaffolding). NASC TG20 is for tube and fitting scaffolds, not for Allround.
  • Distance from the wall. Layher notes that once the clearance between the building and the deck exceeds, for example, 30 cm, side protection may be needed on the inside too (Layher, p. 11). On a front with deep window reveals or external insulation, plan inside brackets or an inside guardrail.
  • Hoisting. Layher recommends a building hoist for erection when the deck height exceeds 8 m, unless the scaffold is no more than 14 m high and 10 m long (Layher, p. 22). A two-storey elevation is well under that.

What is not on the list?

  • Corners and returns if the scaffold wraps round to a side elevation.
  • A loading bay for materials, and the extra ties it needs.
  • Sheeting or debris netting, which raise wind loads and need more ties.
  • Brackets for wide eaves or insulated walls.
  • Sole boards under the base jacks, and transport.

Draw your own elevation in ScaFix, pick Layher Allround, and the app produces the 3D model and the full parts list with the same rules.

This is a planning aid, not structural approval. Layher’s instructions for assembly and use, HSE guidance and a competent person’s inspection decide how the scaffold is built and used.

Frequently asked questions

How many standards does a Layher Allround house elevation need?

24 for an elevation 8.5 m wide with eaves at 5.2 m: 16 standards of 2 m (4 lines × 2 × 2 lifts) and 8 of 1 m for the guardrail above the top lift.

How many scaffold decks for one side of a house?

7 steel decks on this elevation, 2 of them ladder decks with a hatch, one per bay and lift plus one at the foot of the ladder.

How many ties does a two-storey Layher scaffold need?

The engine gives 10 ties for this unsheeted elevation. Sheeting, netting or a loading bay means more ties, set by the manufacturer’s tables or a design.

What guardrail height does a UK scaffold need?

At least 950 mm for the top guardrail, with an intermediate rail so no gap exceeds 470 mm, plus suitable toe boards, under the Work at Height Regulations 2005, Schedule 2.

Does TG20 apply to Layher Allround?

No. TG20 covers tube and fitting scaffolds. A system scaffold such as Allround is erected to the manufacturer’s instructions, and configurations outside them need a design.
