Scaffold system

StepUp Cuplock in ScaFix

ScaFix plans StepUp Cuplock scaffolding with the system's own bay lengths (3'–10') and depths (5' (1.52 m) and 4' (1.22 m)), draws the scaffold in 3D and works out the parts list. Below is our example house with StepUp Cuplock.

How many parts does StepUp Cuplock need for a house?

ScaFix plans StepUp Cuplock with the bay lengths 3'–10' and the scaffold depth 4' (1.22 m). On ScaFix’s 37'-5" (11.4 m) × 17'-4 1/2" (5.3 m) example house, scaffolded all round, StepUp Cuplock needs 573 parts; Bil-Jax Ring Lock needs 565 on the same house.

StepUp Cuplock compared with similar systems on the same house

The same example house, computed by the same engine with each system's bay length and default depth. The difference in piece count comes from the bay length, the depth and how the system is built.

StepUp Cuplock: parts by wall size

Scaffold depth 1.22 m, access: decks with ladders. Each wall is a whole number of 3.05 m bays, so the scaffold covers it exactly. One straight wall, no corners.

US rules for supported scaffolds (OSHA 29 CFR 1926.451)

  • Height-to-base: a supported scaffold taller than 4 times its narrowest base dimension must be restrained by guying, tying, bracing or an equivalent means — §1926.451(c)(1).
  • Ties: the first at the horizontal member closest to the 4:1 height, then vertically every 20 ft (6.1 m) or less on scaffolds 3 ft (0.91 m) wide or less and every 26 ft (7.9 m) or less on wider ones, and horizontally every 30 ft (9.1 m) or less from one end — §1926.451(c)(1)(ii)–(iii).
  • Guardrails: the top rail 38 to 45 in (0.97–1.14 m) above the platform on scaffolds made or placed in service after 1 January 2000, with a midrail about halfway — §1926.451(g)(4).
  • Toeboards, where they are needed against falling objects: at least 3½ in (89 mm) high — §1926.451(h)(4).
  • ANSI/ASSP A10.8 is the US consensus standard for scaffolding safety; the manufacturer's instructions apply on top of both.
  • ScaFix is a planning tool, not a structural calculation or approval. A competent person must check the scaffold before use.

How to compare the setup

  • These are fixed ScaFix examples, not customer jobs. Use the wall dimensions and roof shape stated with each example.
  • Compare the same system variant, bay lengths, scaffold depth, deck heights and access. Matching house dimensions alone do not give matching parts lists.
  • The displayed quantities are calculated by ScaFix's engine. Check the setup against the manufacturer's assembly instructions and the actual job; a parts list is not a structural calculation.

Limits

  • The number of wall ties follows the system's tie rule. Their positions must be checked against the manufacturer's assembly instructions.
  • Round corners, silos and hanging scaffolds are in Pro. A round scaffold is not a standard configuration and needs a calculation or the supplier's documentation. A hanging scaffold (Layher Allround and HAKI Universal) always needs a structural calculation from the supplier or an engineer.

Questions and answers

Which bay lengths does StepUp Cuplock have in ScaFix?

ScaFix uses the bay lengths 3.05 m, 2.44 m, 2.13 m, 1.83 m, 1.52 m, 1.22 m and 0.91 m and the depths 1.52 m and 1.22 m for StepUp Cuplock.

How many parts does the example house need with StepUp Cuplock?

With StepUp Cuplock, the 11.4 m × 5.3 m example house needs 573 parts in all, split into the groups in the table. Your own building gets its own parts list.

How many parts does StepUp Cuplock need for a 12.19 m × 6 m wall?

A 12.19 m long, 6 m high wall with StepUp Cuplock (4 × 3.05 m) needs 146 parts in all according to ScaFix: 30 frames and standards, 9 decks, 10 base jacks and legs and 14 wall ties and fittings, with decks on 2 lifts. A 30.48 m wall 12 m high needs 649.

Is the StepUp Cuplock plan from ScaFix approved for erection?

ScaFix is a planning tool, not a structural calculation or approval. Always check the scaffold against the manufacturer's assembly instructions and the rules that apply before you erect it.

Does ScaFix work in feet and inches?

Yes. ScaFix can show lengths in feet and inches (Imperial) as well as meters, and the parts list switches between the two. In the catalog, StepUp Cuplock has bays of 10', 8', 7', 6', 5', 4' and 3'.
