Types of scaffolding

Pipe scaffolding: which scaffold the word means, and the OSHA numbers for each

Ask three suppliers for pipe scaffolding and you may get two different products. The word is used for steel scaffolds made of tube, and there are two of those on US sites. Here is how to tell them apart, the sizes OSHA gives for the tube kind, and what each one takes on the same wall.

What is pipe scaffolding?

In the US, “pipe scaffolding” can mean two different steel scaffolds: tube and coupler, whose posts OSHA's Appendix A sizes as nominal 2 in (1.90 in OD) “steel tube or pipe”, or welded frame scaffolding, which OSHA calls “tubular welded frame scaffolds”. The rules, parts and quote differ, so name the type first.

Two scaffolds under one name

OSHA's definitions make the split clear. A tube and coupler scaffold is «a supported or suspended scaffold consisting of a platform(s) supported by tubing, erected with coupling devices connecting uprights, braces, bearers, and runners» (1926.450). A fabricated frame scaffold is built from prefabricated end frames; 1926.452(c) is titled «Fabricated frame scaffolds (tubular welded frame scaffolds)». The Mason Contractors Association of America lists other names for the tube kind: «pole and clamp», «pole and knuckle» and «tubular pole» scaffolding.

OSHA's member sizes for tube and coupler scaffolds

Appendix A to Subpart L is non-mandatory, but it is the only place in the federal text that sizes the tube. Every post, runner and brace is nominal 2 in (1.90 in OD) steel tube or pipe; what changes with the duty class is the bearer and the post spacing. Runners are spaced at most 6 ft 6 in vertically, and bearers run in the shorter direction.

Medium50 lb/ft²1.90 in OD, or 2.375 in OD4 ft × 7 ft, or 6 ft × 6 ft
Heavy75 lb/ft²2.375 in OD6 ft × 8 ft

The same appendix limits how many planked levels a tube and coupler scaffold may carry, up to a maximum height of 125 ft:

Both kinds of pipe scaffolding on one wall

The ScaFix engine planned a wall about 30 ft long and 20 ft high both ways: with Metaltech Saferstack frames (10 ft bays, 5 ft frames) and with tube and coupler (bays of 2.4 m, about 7 ft 10½ in, the catalogue's longest tube bay), each with ladder access, guardrails, toe boards and ties.

What the example shows

The tube scaffold needs 78 couplers alone, against 94 pieces for the whole frame scaffold, and 30 standards where the frame version has 14 frames. That is the trade: tube and coupler means many more pieces to carry and fix per foot of wall, and in return it follows shapes that fixed frames cannot.

Questions and answers

Is pipe scaffolding the same as tube and clamp?

Often, yes: tube and clamp, tube and coupler and pole and clamp are names for the same loose-tube scaffold. But some people say pipe scaffolding for welded steel frames too, so confirm whether the quote is for tubes and couplers or for end frames and cross braces.

What size pipe is used for scaffolding?

OSHA's Appendix A sizes tube and coupler posts, runners and braces as nominal 2 in steel tube or pipe, 1.90 in outside diameter, with 2.375 in OD bearers for heavier duty.

Can I mix pipe and frame scaffold parts?

Only if the components fit together without force and the user keeps the scaffold's structural integrity; parts of different makers may not be modified to make them fit unless a competent person finds the result structurally sound (1926.451(b)(10)).

Does ScaFix plan pipe scaffolding?

Yes, both kinds: tube and coupler is one of the catalogue's scaffold types, and US frame systems such as Metaltech Saferstack and Waco are planned in feet and inches. The plan is not a structural approval.

Limits

  • The number of wall ties follows the system's tie rule. Their positions must be checked against the manufacturer's assembly instructions.
  • Round corners, silos and hanging scaffolds are in Pro. A round scaffold is not a standard configuration and needs a calculation or the supplier's documentation. A hanging scaffold (Layher Allround and HAKI Universal) always needs a structural calculation from the supplier or an engineer.
