Scaffolding apps for the site: what they can do
On a scaffold job the phone does five jobs: it measures, shows the design, plans and counts the parts, records inspections and tracks the kit. Very few apps do all four, and the ones that inspect are rarely the ones that design.

What can a scaffolding app do on site?
Site apps fall into five groups. Planning on a phone: ScaFix (iPhone and browser) and Scaffcalc share links. Viewing the design: Avontus Viewer and the Layher app. Inspections and handovers: SMART Inspector, The Scaffold Software and SafeTrak from Scafftag. Hire and stock: Avontus Quantify Web. Measuring apps such as Polycam scan the building; check offline use and data terms first.
Which kinds of scaffolding app are there?
| Job on site | What the app does | Examples (checked on the vendor’s site) |
|---|---|---|
| Measuring | Scans or measures the building for the plan | Polycam, Twindo (formerly Canvas), Apple RoomPlan-based apps |
| Seeing the design | Opens the 3D model, sometimes in augmented reality | Avontus Viewer, the Layher app, Scaffcalc share links |
| Parts and planning | Lays out the scaffold and counts the parts | Scaffcalc in the browser; ScaFix in the browser and on iPhone (we make it) |
| Inspection and handover | Records inspections, handover certificates, defects | SMART Inspector and SMART Handover, The Scaffold Software, SafeTrak from Scafftag |
| Hire and stock | Confirms deliveries and returns by tag or QR code | Avontus Quantify Web |
The rest of this guide goes through each job, with the questions that decide whether an app helps or just adds another login.
Can a phone measure a building for a scaffold?
Partly. A tape and a laser measure are still the reference, but phones with a LiDAR sensor can capture a facade quickly. Apple lists the LiDAR Scanner on the iPhone 12 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro; the compare page shows which current models have it. Apple’s RoomPlan framework uses the camera and LiDAR to create a 3D floor plan of a room, and apps such as Polycam (photogrammetry and LiDAR, 2D floor plans on site) and Twindo (formerly Canvas, scan-to-CAD exports to Revit and AutoCAD) turn scans into drawings.
Two limits matter for scaffolding. A scan measures what the sensor sees, so high eaves, ridges and the far side of a balcony need checking. And a scan is a building model, not a scaffold: someone still has to place bays, lifts and ties against it. Check the critical heights with a laser before ordering.

How do 3D and AR apps help the crew?
A 3D model on a tablet answers the questions a crew asks at the van: where does the stair tower go, how does the corner turn, which lift gets the loading bay. Avontus Viewer shows Designer models in 3D on iPhone, Android, tablets and Windows; for VR and AR the page adds that Avontus Viewer Lens is required. The Layher app is narrower than it sounds: on iPhone only, it shows extra 3D views of scaffold structures when you scan marked images in Layher’s price lists with the camera. Layher lists a SIM2Field XR app alongside its LayPLAN suite. Scaffcalc shares a 3D project as a link that opens on a phone without installing anything.
What do scaffold inspection and tag apps do?
A scaffold that someone could fall 2 m or more from has to be inspected every 7 days under regulation 12, with a written report each time, and the full UK rule set is in UK scaffolding regulations. In the US, 29 CFR 1926.451(f)(3) asks for a competent person’s check before each work shift. That is a lot of paperwork, and it is where apps earn their place.
- [SMART Inspector](https://smartscaffolder.com/scaffolding-software/scaffold-inspection-app/) completes inspections from site on smartphones and tablets, with cloud access, and SMART Handover creates and distributes handover certificates (SMART Scaffolder).
- [Scafftag](https://www.scafftag.co.uk/), a division of Brady, sells physical scaffold tags and offers SafeTrak inspection software for the records behind them.
- [The Scaffold Software](https://thescaffoldsoftware.co.uk/) stores weekly inspections as signed PDFs with photos, offers TG20:21-aware handover certificate templates, and links to an App Store app.
- [Avontus Quantify Web](https://www.avontus.com/quantify/) lets crews scan QR-coded scaffold tags and inspect scaffolds with a phone or tablet.
A tag on the scaffold tells the user its status today; the app keeps the history behind it. A good one links each inspection to a scaffold, a date, an inspector and photos of defects, so a principal contractor can see the trail without phoning the office. For the checks themselves, see the scaffold inspection checklist.
Can apps track scaffold hire on site?
Yes, if the yard tags its kit or its scaffolds. Quantify’s field crews confirm deliveries and returns by scanning QR tags, and the same system bills hire in advance, in arrears or both. For a contractor who only erects its own stock, a delivery note and a parts list per job may do the same with less set-up.
Does it work offline?
Ask before you buy. Basements, steel-framed buildings and rural sites lose signal, and an inspection app that cannot save without a connection forces paper notes and double entry. Of the vendor pages we read on 23 October 2026, none of the inspection apps above stated offline use either way, so test it: put the phone in flight mode, complete an inspection and check that it syncs afterwards.
What about privacy and workers’ data?
Inspection apps collect names, signatures, photos and often locations. In the UK, the ICO says telematics data recording drivers’ activity is personal information and that monitoring of that kind needs a data protection impact assessment because it is high risk. The same thinking applies to an app that logs where an inspector was and when. Before roll-out, decide what the app records, who can see it, how long it is kept and where the server is, and tell the crew.
How do you choose a scaffolding app?
- Name the job. Measuring, design viewing, planning, inspection and hire are different products; pick one per job rather than one that does all five badly.
- Check the platforms your crew carries. Some apps are iPhone-only, others web-based; mixed Android and iPhone crews need a browser option.
- Test offline and sync. A site without signal is the normal case for many trades.
- Check the export. Inspection records must reach the principal contractor as PDF or a shared link, and must outlive the subscription.
- Read the data terms. Where is the data stored, who owns it, and can you delete a worker’s records when they leave?
To compare the planning side in more depth, see scaffold design software. ScaFix belongs to the planning group: the web app runs in any browser on PC, Mac or Android, the iPhone app adds LiDAR scanning on phones with the sensor, and one account covers both, so a scaffold measured on site opens in the office with its 3D model and parts list for any of 76 scaffold systems; it keeps no inspection records.
Apps keep records; they do not make a scaffold safe. In Great Britain the Work at Height Regulations 2005 and HSE, and in the US OSHA’s 29 CFR 1926 Subpart L, set the inspection duties, and the manufacturer’s instructions decide how the scaffold is built; a competent person must inspect it, with or without an app.
Frequently asked questions
Is there an app for scaffold inspections?
Yes. SMART Inspector, The Scaffold Software, SafeTrak from Scafftag and Avontus Quantify Web all record inspections on a phone or tablet. Check offline use and how reports reach the client.
Which iPhones have LiDAR for scanning buildings?
Apple lists the LiDAR Scanner on Pro models such as the iPhone 12 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro. Apple’s compare page shows which current models have it.
What is a scaffold tag?
A tag at the access point showing whether the scaffold has been inspected and is safe to use. Tag systems such as Scafftag pair the physical tag with software that keeps the inspection history.
Can I view a scaffold design in augmented reality?
Avontus Viewer offers AR and VR for Designer models, with Avontus Viewer Lens required for those modes. The Layher app on iPhone adds 3D views when you scan marked images in Layher’s price lists, which is a catalogue aid rather than a site overlay.
Do scaffolding apps work without signal?
It depends on the app, and many vendors do not say. Test it in flight mode before roll-out: complete an inspection offline and check that it syncs.
